The St. Lawrence University volleyball team won the 2014 Victory Promotions Tournament on Saturday by defeating CEGEP Andre-Laurendeau and SUNYIT in the Burkman Gymnasium. Senior captain Jenna Street was named to the All-Tournament team after a 24-assist performance in the clinching victory over the Wildcats.

The Saints improve to 4-3 overall this season, as the opening 3-1 win over CEGEP Andre-Laurendeau is a non-NCAA contest. St. Lawrence won that match 25-21, 23-25, 25-8, 25-22 behind strong performances from Street, Cristina Deschaine and Mariah Dignan. The victory moved the Scarlet and Brown into the championship match with SUNYIT (2-4), where St. Lawrence cruised to the 25-12, 25-14-25-16 win.

"Our discussion going into today's matches was to minimize the unforced errors. We handed away far too many points to our opponents yesterday and while we were still able to escape with two victories, we know that that will usually not be the case," said St. Lawrence head coach Shelly Roiger. "While we were better in that category, we still need to continue to improve in the areas of service errors and hitting errors particularly and force the opponent to earn their points."

In the championship match between St. Lawrence and SUNYIT, the Saints got out to fast starts in all three games and built solid leads in each game. The Wildcats were plagued by 16 hitting errors and five serving errors, while Lexi Brown had nine kills on 12 attempts for the Saints to lead the offense. Street's 24 assists went along with two kills and a team-high five digs, and Deschaine chipped in five kills and a game-high six block assists. St. Lawrence was too much for SUNYIT, which was led by Emma Larson's five kills and Shelby Kostal's seven digs.

"Such a big part of the sport of volleyball is not losing control when you are out-of-system and being able to be productive and staying focused. I am pleased with the progress our team has shown and it's been a while since we've won the Victory Promotions Tournament and I'm confident that this weekend is just a reflection of greater things to come in our season," added Coach Roiger. "We'll enjoy the victory for a day and then we'll get back to having another great practice next week in preparation for Potsdam on our home court."

St. Lawrence will host Potsdam State on Wednesday, September 10 in the Burkman Gymnasium at 7:00pm before heading to the Oswego Invitational next weekend.
