St. Lawrence University senior captain Jenna Street recorded her 2,000th career assist on Saturday at the Oneonta Invitational, as the Saints split with Hunter (L, 3-0) and Oneonta State (W, 3-1).
St. Lawrence wrapped up the regular season schedule with a 24-11 record. The Saints fell to Hunter 25-23, 25-22, 25-23 but regrouped to defeat the hosting Red Dragons 27-25, 16-25, 25-22, 25-18. Junior Marisa Turner was named to the all-tournament team for her defensive efforts, while Cristina Deschaine broke the single-season blocks record, a mark that had stood since 2006.
"We lacked energy and focus against Hunter and our lack of aggressiveness cost us. We went through the motions and didn't play with the killer instinct that we've been playing with lately," said St. Lawrence head coach Shelly Roiger. "We were able to minimize our mistakes late in sets against Oneonta and, even though it wasn't our best match, I'm very proud of our ability to finish."
Cristina Deschaine and Lexi Brown each finished with six kills in the opening loss to Hunter, while Becky Briggs added five. Street earned her 2,000th assist early, as she entered just one shy of the milestone, though Katie Kull finished with a team-high 13 assists and nine digs.
St. Lawrence bounced back in the second match, holding off Oneonta in four after the match was tied 1-1. Rookie Masha Kolesnikova led the offense with 10 kills, while classmate Maddy Ruehl chipped in seven. Turner was key with 14 digs, while Kull had 18 assists.
Oneonta was led by Jill Darpino's nine kills. Jessica Pelaccio had 17 assists and Allyson Coniglione added 11 digs.
St. Lawrence is the No. 2 seed in next weekend's Liberty League Tournament, which will be hosted by Clarkson University in Potsdam, NY. The Saints will take on the RIT Tigers in the semifinals on Friday, November 7 at 5:00pm, followed by Clarkson and Union.
