Stivers Is co-track athlete of the men's track meet, Saints 3rd in Liberty League

Sophomore Harrison Stivers shared Track Athlete of the Meet honors at the 2016 Liberty League Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the Merrick-Pinkard Track and Field Complex on Saturday, but the St. Lawrence University men's team had to settle for third in the five team field, coming up just one point short of RIT in the battle for second place.

Rensselaer swept the team titles in the meet, winning both men's and women's titles for the first time since 2011. The RPI men totaled 271 points with RIT second at 173 and the Saints third with 172 followed by Vassar at 79, Union with 27 and Bard with 15.

Stivers won the 400 in a Liberty League meet record 49.56 seconds and the 200 in 22.42 seconds and ram the second leg of the winning 4x400 relay which set a meet record in 3:20.50. He shared the runner of the meet honors with RPI distance standout Ben Fazio, who won the 1500 and set a meet record in the 5000 meters.

Senior Nick Crawford had another big day for the Saints as he anchored the record-setting 4x400, joining Stivers, Travis Hamre and Daniel Viscardi, won the 400 hurdles in 55.09 seconds and was second in the 100 meter dash in 11.29 seconds. He also anchored the second place 4x100 relay with ran 42.61, finishing a tenth of a second behind RIT and just ahead of Vassar in a tight finish. He was joined on the 4x100 by Rajiv Heron, Gordon White and Hamre.

White and Scott Kasson had field event wins for the Saints as White won the long jump with a mark of 6.40 meters and Kasson won the shot put with a 14.41 meter throw. White also scored in the 100 meters with a eighth place finish while Kasson was fifth in the discus.

Other track event scorers for the Saints included Thomas Caulfield who was third in both the 1500 and 5000, Evan Garvey, second in the 800 in 1:59.96 with Tim O'Brien placing eighth in the same event; Jack Martin with a fourth in the 3000 steeplechase, Viscardi with a fifth and Joo Won Ma with a sixth in the 400 hurdles, Hamre with a third in the 200 and a seventh in the 400 and Mark Jannini with third and Nathaniel Stowe with a sixth in the 110 hurdles.

In field events, Sebastian Quintilliani was third in the long jump and high jump and Viscardi was fifth in both the long jump and triple jump. Sam Emerson and Taylor Bouchard tied for seventh in the high jump, Connor Heaney was fourth and William Merchant seventh in the javelin, Merchant was eighth in the pole vault and Bryce DeBoer was fourth in the discus with Dylan Babcock finishing eighth.

The Saints will send select competitors to the Penn Relays next weekend with others competing in a Saturday meet at St. John Fisher. The Saints will also host the New York State Collegiate Track Conference multi-event championships Sunday and Monday at the Merrick-Pinkard Complex.
