Potsdam, NY – Four Clarkson University Women's Basketball starters combined to score all but two of the Golden Knights' points, but those four did enough damage to hold off Union College on Friday night, helping the Green and Gold claim a 66-58 Liberty League decision at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights improved to 10-8 overall and the team edged over .500 in league play at 5-4. Union fell to 8-8 and 4-4.

Both teams came out hot from the floor, getting enough space to let off good looks. Union's Jenni Barra made her first three 3-pointers, though the first banked in, but that gave her enough confidence to keep launching, which worked in the Dutchwomen's favor. While Union was perfect from beyond the arc in the first quarter (4-for-4), Clarkson settled for mid-range jumpers, but the Knights were equally adept. It wasn't until the midway point of the second quarter that Clarkson banged in its first 3-pointer as Madison Shea nailed one from the elbow extended to give the Knights a 23-21 advantage. Union regained the lead with a pair of shots, but another 3-pointer from the Knights, this time from Devin Sorell put Clarkson back up by one. That is where the Knights would end the half as Molly Stewart made a layup in the final 10 seconds to give Clarkson a 28-27 advantage at the break.

Stephanie Grobe made four of her first five shots from the floor and finished with 10 points in the half, while Madison Shea chipped in nine points and four assists. For Union, Barra buried four 3-pointers for 12 points, and Sophia Borg came off the bench to contribute six points for the Dutchwomen.

Union briefly regained the lead on two occasions in the third quarter and tied the game twice in the fourth quarter, but the Dutchwomen couldn't contain Clarkson as they did a few weeks ago in Schenectady. With the score tied 48-48 midway through the fourth, Stephanie Grobe converted a jumper and Devin Sorell buried a 3-pointer to give the Knights a small five-point advantage. Though Union would again trim the deficit, freshman Molly Stewart hit a clutch shot to all but clinch the contest. Madison Shea missed a jumper, but got her own offensive rebound and then found Stewart at the top of the key. Stewart calmly set herself and made the 3-pointer to give the Knights an eight-point lead. From there, Clarkson made enough of its free throws down the stretch to win by the same margin.

Sorell finished with a game-high 20 points and Grobe closed with 17 points on 8-for-14 shooting. Stewart added 13 points and six boards and Shea finished with 14 points, seven assists and four steals. For Union, Barra ended up with 19 points on 7-for-14 shooting with five 3-pointers. Sophie Borg also closed with 13 points and eight boards.
