Canton, NY – The SUNY Canton women's lacrosse team outscored visiting Alfred University by nine after halftime to earn a 13-6 victory on Senior Day on Wednesday.
The Roos trailed 5-3 at halftime but limited the Saxons (3-9) to just a single score over the final 30 minutes while exploding for 10 goals of their own including the final five of the contest to secure the win.
Katelynn Nutter, Amanda Woods and MaryClare Bowes scored first half goals from the Roos (6-6) as they led 3-2 but three unanswered tallies from Alfred over the final 5:43 gave the visitors a slim 5-3 lead at intermission.
Canton caged the first five goals out of halftime as Molly Denny got the scoring started with a pair of goals before Allison Auger, Bowes and Nutter all added scores. Tracy Johnston finally got the Saxons on the board for the first time in the second half with 10:43 to play.
The Roos responded with two goals from Bowes and one each from Auger, Nutter and Theresa DiMartin down the stretch.
Molly Denny had a monster game finishing with game-highs of six caused turnovers and four draw controls while adding a team-best seven ground balls. She also scored twice and added a pair of assists. Mia Jermano and DiMartin picked up four draw controls each and Bowes added a game-high four goals to go with four ground balls and four caused turnovers. Nutter posted three goals and one assists, while Auger added two scores and one helper.
Becca Kieffer made seven saves in the win, while Shannon Gray turned aside 15 shots in the loss for Alfred.
The Roos honored their five seniors Becca Kieffer, Lora Ardoin, Theresa DiMartin, Sydney Kinder and Abbey Diabo prior to today's contest.

The women's lacrosse team is back in action on Sunday when it visits Elmira College at 1 p.m.
