POTSDAM, N.Y.—Hobart College senior forward Jacob Fox (Kansas City, Mo./Pembroke Hill) scored with one minute left to help the Statesmen (2-1) down the SUNY Potsdam men's soccer team (2-1) 2-1 in the second round of the 2015 Potsdam College Cup. SUNY Plattsburgh (3-0) defeated Purchase College (1-2) 4-1 to retain the cup title. Cardinal senior midfielder Fabian Chaparro (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) was named the tournament's most valuable player. Senior captain Ben Firlit (South Glens Falls, N.Y./South Glens Falls) and junior defender Spencer Johnston (Valatie, N.Y./Hudson Valley C.C.) were named to the all-tournament team for the runner-up Bears.

Hobart struck just 1:05 into the contest off a Zach Poretz (Ashburn, Va./Broad Run) corner kick. The sophomore midfielder launched the ball into box and senior defender Tyler Niles (Narbeth, Pa./Lower Merion) headed it home for a 1-0 lead. The Statesmen held off Potsdam for the next 82:20. In the stifling heat, the Bears battled evenly with Hobart, but were unable to break though early despite several strong scoring chances. Statesmen senior goalie Tyler Serafine (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua) made three big saves in the first half to preserve the lead at the break. The shots were even at six apiece after 45 minutes.

Hobart's defense continued to frustrate Potsdam for the early part of the second half as well. The game grew increasingly physical as the clock wound down. Four of the contests' five yellow cards were issued in the final 20 minutes. A couple strong chances in the remainder of the game gave the Bears the momentum they needed, keeping pressure in the Statesmen defensive end. When Hobart was able to push the ball up field they put it on net. With 13 minutes remaining, Potsdam junior goalie Nick Davies (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas) robbed Statesmen freshman midfielder Derek Acheampong (Needham, Mass./Noble and Greenough) to keep the deficit to one.

Five minutes later at the 83:35 mark, senior captain Tom Benedetto (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury) fed Firlit. He dribbled to the top of the box and launched a sinking line drive at Serafine. The ball hit the turf and bounced up so quickly off the goalie's face that he had no time to react. As the ball rolled toward the left corner of the goal, the stunned Serafine started to move, but couldn't get there in time. The momentum seemed to finally swing Potsdam's way. However, Fox answered with the game-winner at the 89-minute mark. Sophomore midfielder Adrian Colmenares (Caracas, Venezuela/Lawrence Academy) sent a cross to his left just inside the box. It hit a Potsdam defender and popped out to the open Fox who drove it into the back of the net.

Bears Head Coach Adam Parker was very encouraged despite the split.

"I thought the whole team was great this weekend," said Parker. "They came up against a very good Hobart team today. They really started to play at the level we need them to play at the rest of the year if we're going to be competitive in the conference. We took some big strides forward and battled through the heat. It's kind of unfortunate that we came up short, but there's a lot good things we saw from a lot of different players. It's a loss, but we're feeling good about the direction we're heading."Potsdam edged Hobart in shots 15-13, but the Statesmen finished with a 7-1 advantage in corners. Serafine made six saves, while Davies turned aside three attempts.

Plattsburgh 4, Purchase 1

In the early game, Plattsburgh used a two-goal burst in a 1:35 span to seize control of a tight game. The teams battled without a goal for the first 30 minutes. At 30:30, Chaparro moved the ball to junior forward Alexis Archilla (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley). Archilla stepped around a Panther defender and scored his second goal of the tournament. Almost 10 minutes later, junior midfielder Terrance Spence (Huntington, N.Y./Suffolk C.C.) tipped home two crosses in 95 seconds to make it a 3-0 Cardinal advantage. Freshman forward Alex Price (Glenmont, N.Y./Bethlehem) and Archilla assisted on the tallies in succession. In the 66th minute, sophomore forward Jon Cabeca (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y./Briarcliff) set up junior forward Chris Bowden (Commack, N.Y./Commack) to make it 4-0. Purchase finally answered at 71:02 with its lone goal of the weekend coming from senior midfielder Matthew Ebel (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place). Senior forward Nick Ishoo (Tarrytown, N.Y./Irvington) assisted on the play.

Plattsburgh outshot the Panthers 22-7 and finished with a 7-2 advantage in corners. Senior goalie Mitchell Jordon (Bolton Landing, N.Y./Bolton) made one save and allowed the goal in 75:31 to earn the victory. Cardinal junior Steven Reiche (Mahopac, N.Y./Bryant & Stratton College) didn't face a shot in the last 14:29. Panther senior Esteban Aquilar (East Hampton, N.Y./East Hampton) was tagged with the loss after stopping five shots and allowing all four goals in 70:30. Junior Uriel Milechberg (Buenos Aries, Argentina) made one save in the last 19:30

The Bears are back in action on Tuesday evening when they host Johnson State at SUNY Canton at 7 p.m.
