First-year Katie Stames scored her fifth goal of the season and senior Mackenzie Collins notched her fourth goal in three games to help the St. Lawrence women's soccer team close out their home schedule with a 2-0 shutout win over SUNY Potsdam on Sandy MacAllaster field Tuesday afternoon.

The Saints put the pressure on the Bears from the opening kickoff, outshooting Potsdam 13-1 in the first half with a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks, one of which nearly put the Saints on top with nine minutes to play in the half.

Potsdam goalkeeper Bri Thibeau made a point blank save on a header by sophomore Taylor Goldsborough off a corner kick by junior Caroline Crandall to keep the game scoreless.

"Potsdam defended very well," Head Coach Franco Bari said. "They were organized and disciplined. I was pleased with our composure and ability to find ways to break them down. Both goals were fantastic."

It wasn't until the 40th minute that Stames and the Saints were able to break through Potsdam's strong defensive line and get one past Thibeau.

Emma Fleming earned her first point of the season when she played a long ball from along the left sideline to Stames on the edge of the Potsdam box. Stames settled and took a quick touch around a defender before she snuck a shot in between Thibeau and the near post to give St. Lawrence a 1-0 lead heading into the break.

In the 57th minute, Collins – who earned Liberty League offensive performer of the week on Monday – pushed a ball along the ground from the right corner of the six-yard box and behind Thibeau for her fourth of the season. Emily Depoy and Lindsay Geier earned assists on the play, as Geier was able to get her body in front of a Potsdam clear attempt in the middle of the field 25 yards from goal and push the ball to DePoy on the corner of the box.

With the Saints leading 2-0, Potsdam turned up the offense late in the second half and gave goalkeeper Kelsey West her first real test of the day with 17 minutes remaining.

Jaci Morr used her speed to get behind the St. Lawrence defense on a long through ball and had only West to beat to cut the deficit in half. The Saints keeper came off her line and made a great sliding stop on Morr's initial shot. The Potsdam forward ran through the ball and looked to have another on goal, but junior back Adrianna Morra made a long recovery run and got back in time to block her second attempt and preserve the shutout.

West finished with three saves for the Saints, while Thibeau made seven stops for the Bears.

With the win St. Lawrence improves to 11-5-1 overall, as Potsdam drops to 6-11-1. Though their non-conference win did not affect their place in the Liberty League standings, the Saints got a little help from Bard on Tuesday afternoon, as the Raptors battled Vassar to a 1-1 draw in Poughkeepsie, giving St. Lawrence sole possession of fourth place with one game to play. The Saints can secure a playoff position with a win at Clarkson in the season finale on Saturday afternoon.
