NEW PALTZ, NY--An impressive come-from-behind victory allowed the Clarkson University Volleyball team to surpass its previous best start in program history as the Golden Knights topped off another perfect day with a five-set victory over Ithaca College, following a three-set sweep of Mount St. Mary, at the Hawks Invitational.
The Golden Knights moved to 11-0, besting the previous beginning to a season (2003) in program history, with the 25-19, 25-13, 25-12 win over Mount St. Mary and five-set victory over Ithaca College 22-25, 19-25, 27-25, 25-21, 15-9.
Against Mount St. Mary, junior Sara Artus (St. Regis Falls, NY) led the team with 18 kills, making just two errors along the way, while Nicole Edwards (Weiser, ID) added seven kills. Freshman setter Lani Durio (Austin, TX) produced 35 assists and classmate Erika Chin (Katy, TX) led the team with 12 digs.
Versus Ithaca, three players finished with double-figures in kills, led by Artus with 20. Megan Mahon (Irvine, CA) added 14 and Courtney Haines (Crestview, FL) contributed 12 kills, respectively. Durio had a career-high 47 assists, and senior libero Alison Schroeder (Webster, NY) posted 25 digs.
"We started off very poorly today, but found our fighting spirit as the match progressed," stated head coach Johan Dulfer about the Ithaca match. "Ithaca has improved a great deal and both teams stayed in system for a majority of the match. The turn around came when we limited our service errors and put more pressure on their back court, while stepping up our energy. I am very proudn of how we pulled out this tough win against an outstanding opponent. We are learning what it means to put our hearts on the line and trust each other."
