CANTON -- The St. Lawrence University women's soccer team claimed the top spot at the North Country Lotto Classic with a 2-0 victory over Ohio Wesleyan at Sandy MacAllaster Field on Sunday.

The Saints, who improved to 2-0, were led by sophomore Mackenzie Collins, juniors Julia Friesen and Corinne Werner, and senior Stephanie Sayward, who each earned All-Tournament honors for their efforts over the weekend.

"The team connected very well today," said head coach Franco Bari.

"I was particularly impressed with the work ethic in both the first and second half. This group has a lot of heart and passion this season and it showed today. Both their defensive and offensive efforts were excellent. While we still have a lot of work to do, this is a great start."

Ohio Wesleyan, which falls to 0-2 on the young season, was led by junior goalkeeper Hannah Zacharias, sophomore Sarah Stachowiak and senior Jessie Huschart, who each earned spots on the All-Tournament team.

St. Lawrence was in control offensively throughout the majority of the game, but Zacharias and the OW defensive backs made several nice plays to keep the Saints' damage to a minimum.

The home team got on the board in the 35th minute when first-year student Emily DePoy served a nice ball on a corner kick that would have floated in the goal had OW's Audrey Bell not headed it away for the defensive save.

First-year student Samantha Rock, however, collected the rebound on the far post and drove the ball home for her first collegiate goal, the game-winner, which gave her team the 1-0 advantage.

Despite having several good chances to score, the Saints were held to one goal until just under 2:00 to play when junior back Liz Laprade carried the ball down the right side and delivered a cross that Sayward headed into the right side of the net as insurance. Collins was fast on the right wing for the Saints, but couldn't come up with a score in today's game.

She had a shot hit off the crossbar, and Zacharias also came up with several nice saves to keep her off the board including a diving onehanded save in the beginning of the second half. Werner and Laprade anchored a solid effort by the Saints defense that kept the Battling Bishop's off the scoreboard.

OW's best chance to score was in the 56th minute, when Elizabeth Riggio collected a ball cleared to the crease off a corner kick and fired it to the far post, but the ball was slightly deflected off a Saint defender and went just wide left.

The Saints owned a 23-6 advantage in shots and a 9-1 edge in corner kicks.

For OW, Zacharias finished with seven saves, several of which were tremendous efforts, but she falls to 0-2 on the season. Meanwhile, first-year student Kelsey West earned the shutout in goal for the Saints as she stopped all three shots she faced.

DePoy, Laprade and Rock each earned honorable mention status for their efforts over the weekend.

The Saints will be back in action with a pair of non-conference road games against Cortland State and Medaille next weekend, Sept. 8 and 9, respectively.
