The diving stick of senior Michelle Laframboise just 2:00 into overtime gave the St. Lawrence Saints field hockey team a 2-1 victory over the Hartwick College Hawks in overtime.
The Saints (2-1) dominated the first half and had multiple opportunities to score, drawing 13 penalty corners and firing off 17 shots. Hawks goalie Mackenzie Chapman made 15 of her 20 total saves in the first half to shut down the Saints sticks as both teams were scoreless in the first period.
The Saints got on the board just 2:00 into the second half on a shot by senior Kelsey Berry. The New Hampton, NY native crashed the post and lifted the rebound of classmate Brooke Maloney's shot past Chapman for her first goal of the season.
The Hawks then answered the Saints with a goal of their own at 14:19 as Angela Eberly fed Kelsey Kimble from the left side and Kimble slid the ball past Saints goalie Brittany Clark.
Closing in on the end of the second half, the home team was forced to play two players down as Laframboise and sophomore Ashley Ferenczy were given yellow cards just ten seconds apart around the 61:00 mark. The Saints were able to kill off the Hawk's two-man advantage to force the game into overtime.
The deciding goal came just 2:12 into the overtime period off as the Saints took their 21st penalty corner of the game. Laframboise fed junior Taylor Vogt who found Maloney at the top of the circle who fired a hard shot to the right side of the goal. An outstretched Laframboise then deflected the shot into the net to give the Saints the victory.
St. Lawrence held sizable advantages in both shots (25-4) and penalty corners (21-10), but Hartwick goalkeeper Mackenzie Chapman made 20 saves in effort to keep her team in the game. Junior goalkeeper Brittany Clark (3 saves) and the rest of the Saints defense thwarted nine of the Hawk's ten penalty corner attempts, allowing just one goal in the contest.
The Saints are back in action next Saturday, September 18th as they travel to Geneva, NY to battle Franklin & Marshall. The game is scheduled to start at 4:00pm.
