A goal for St. John Fisher early in the second half proved to be the difference, as the St. Lawrence University field hockey team fell to the Cardinals 1-0 in their homecoming game on North Country Field at Hall-Leet Stadium Saturday afternoon.

"I think it was a very well-played game for both teams today," head coach Fran Grembowicz said. "It was a very good defensive game for us all around and Lexi Oskam had a great day in the net. We had opportunities to put the ball in the net in the first half, but just couldn't put the ball in the net."

The first half was evenly matched, as the teams went into the break tied at 0-0 with 11 shots each.

Some of the Saints best scoring chances came one after the other late in the first half, as Isabel Thompson, Jackie Reiss and Bailey Sherwin were each stopped in close by St. John Fisher's goalkeeper Ashley Maynard.

Katelyn Slomba drilled a hard shot from just inside the circle on the right side at the 44 minute mark for the game's only goal and after taking the lead in the second, the Cardinals shut down any offensive outbursts for the Saints, limiting them to just one shot attempt.

"Looking ahead, it's now about keeping our offensive push up the field all together as well as maintaining our structure on defense," Grembowicz added.

St. John Fisher finished with a 24-12 advantage in total shots and also recorded 14 shots on goal to the Saints' six.

Sherwin led the Saints with four shots, including two on goal.

Junior Lexi Oskam made 12 saves for St. Lawrence, while Maynard finished with six in the shutout. Melissa Grosshans also recorded a defensive save for the Saints.

With the loss, St. Lawrence falls to 1-3 on the season, while St. John Fisher improved to 2-1.

The Saints will travel to William Smith next Saturday for neutral site games against Lebanon Valley and Manhattanville in Geneva, New York.
