Canton, NY – The SUNY Canton special teams units were responsible for three goals as the men's hockey team upended visiting Franklin Pierce University, 5-4 in overtime Saturday afternoon.

SUNY Canton (6-14-3) got on the board first at the 15:04 mark of the first. Zach Paisley (Yonkers, NY) took the puck into the offensive zone and skated behind the net left to right finding a cutting Dave Schneider (Indianapolis, IN) in the slot who fired a one-timer past the blocker of Kyle Moran to make it 1-0.

The Ravens (4-16-3) responded just 37 seconds later when Connor Mauro netted his first career goal off passes from Kyle Craig and Paddy Murphy. Mauro was able to slip the puck past Morgan Barr (Almonte, ON) as he was shielded by a number of players out in front.

Midway through the second period Lafferty fired a shot from a sharp angle at point blank range and Moran made the initial stop. However, Kristian Leach (Indianapolis, IN) was in the right spot following up the rebound and sneaking the puck past Moran from the right side.

Austin Root had the game-winner 3:13 into overtime on Saturday.

The Roo penalty kill unit came up huge as Cory Giczewski (Fountain Valley, CA) skated in on the breakaway and netted a short-handed tally beating Moran high into the right corner to make it 3-1 at the 13:25 mark. The Ravens responded 40 seconds later when Matthew Geib was the recipient of a Brett Oldaker pass. Geib received the puck at the top of the left circle and laced a shot in the top left corner for his first of the season to get Franklin Piece within 3-2.

Back-to-back Raven penalties gave the Roo power play unit a 5-on-3 opportunity and they wasted no time scoring 32 seconds in. Lafferty fed Giczewski in the slot who rocketed a snipe off the bottom of the crossbar and in to give the hosts a two-goal cushion after two periods.

Franklin Pierce made it a one-goal game at the 11:47 mark of the third period. Kyle Craig took an initial shot from the left circle that was turned aside by Barr. The rebound went right to Alex Schleper who put it in the open right side of net.

The Ravens would climb all the way back as Ilester Little tied the game at 4-4 with just 1:59 left in regulation. Little and Brendan Glynn skated into the offensive zone and Glynn made a quick centering pass to Little in the slot who put the puck over the glove of Barr sending the game to overtime.

The Roos dominated play in the extra session outshooting Franklin Pierce 4-0. Austin Root (Manhattan Beach, CA) would come up in the clutch 3:13 into the extra session. Saylor Preston (Winnipeg, MB) won the faceoff in the right circle back to Root at the point who fired a quick shot that snuck just inside the right post as the fans and players erupted in jubilation at the Roos House.

Barr made 26 stops on the night and did not face a single shot in overtime. Moran had another solid outing for the Ravens turning aside 42 Roo shots. Special teams were huge for SUNY Canton as they went 2-for-6 with the extra skater and tallied a short-handed marker.

This concludes the 2013-14 campaign for the SUNY Canton men's hockey team.
