POTSDAM — Castleton State sophomore forward Mallory Costello (Vernon, N.J./Vernon Township) scored twice in the opening minutes to lead the Spartans (2-0) to 4-1 victory over the SUNY Potsdam women’s soccer team (1-1) in the 2013 Collegiate Village Cup Championship.

In the early game, New England College (1-1) downed Becker College (0-2) 4-0.

Massena native Steffanie Premo (Massena, N.Y./Massena) and Chateaugay graduate Alexis Beach (Chateaugay, N.Y./Chateaugay) represented the Bears on the All-Tournament Team (full team below).

Costello finished a pass from freshman forward Nicole Wershoven (Southington, Conn./Southington) just 43 seconds into the contest.

She struck again seven minutes later with a helper from Jenna Bostwick (Pembroke, Mass./Pembroke) to put the Spartans up 2-0.

Freshman forward Hailey Hollenbeck (Hudson, N.Y./Hudson) nearly got one back in the sixth minute, but hit the post.

With 22 minutes left in the half, Bears freshman goalie Michaela Cole (Parishville, N.Y./Parishville-Hopkinton) stopped a blast from the foot for Castleton sophomore defender Jessica Phillips (Drewsville, N.H./Fall Mountain).

As the period went on, the Bears slowed the Spartan momentum, but didn’t stop it. Freshman midfielder Morgan Young (Fairfax, Vt./BFA-Fairfax) made it 3-0 at 36:24 with another assist from Phillips and Castleton took the three-goal lead into the break.

The Spartans continued to press in the second half. In the 52nd minute, Massena native Dominique Valancius (Massena, N.Y./Massena) broke loose and scored on a breakaway. Bostwick assisted on the play.

Potsdam’s offense struggled in the second half, but finally broke through with 2:56 left.

Hollenbeck found Beach at the left side of the net to make it 4-1. Potsdam wasn’t able to draw any closer as the final minutes ticked down.

Freshman goalkeeper Jessica Binkowski (Goshen, Conn./Wamogo Regional) earned the win without a save. Cole was tagged with the loss for the Bears, finishing with three saves and three goals allowed in the first half.

Freshman Sara Livecchi (Red Hook, N.Y./Red Hook) allowed a goal and made two stops for Potsdam in the final 45 minutes. Bears head coach Mark Misiak admitted the beginning of the game set the tone.

“Obviously, we got off to a nightmare start,” said Misiak. “When you allow a goal in the first minute you never make it easy on yourself and end up chasing the game. If Hailey’s (Hollenbeck) shot goes in instead of hitting the post, maybe we get a bounce in our step and maybe things change. But we deserved the result we got today. We didn’t play well.”

Potsdam looks to rebound Wednesday night when the Bears host crosstown rival Clarkson at 7 p.m.

New England College started quickly against Becker in the day’s opener. Just 48 seconds in, sophomore midfielder Caroline Mols (Verona, N.J./Verona) carried the ball the length of the field and launched it just above the hands of Hawks junior goalie Kaitlyn Rose (North Attleboro, Mass./North Attleboro).

At 37:30, Becker junior forward Alycia Dery (Millville, Mass./Blackstone-Millville) broke past the defense with a chance to tie the game, but Pilgrim junior goalie Tricia Sardagnola (Shrewsbury, Mass./Assabet Valley) charged out to cut off the shot.

In the 22nd minute, junior defender Haley Calabro (Manchester, N.H./Central) buried the rebound off a shot from freshman Emily Gubbins (Westmoreland, N.Y./Westmoreland) for a 2-0 New England lead. Gubbins then added an unassisted marker of her own at 35:35 to make it a three-goal advantage.

Pilgrim senior forward Alyssa Krause (Northfield, N.H./Dean College) scored less than four minutes into the final period, roofing a pass from junior defender Brooke LePage (West Greenwich, R.I./Exeter-West Greenwich).

The teams traded opportunities over the remainder of the game, but the score remained the same. New England outshot Becker 32-6 and finished with a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks. Sardagnola earned the win with two saves in 68:33.

Pilgrim freshman goalie Mackenzie Meegan (Phoenix, Ariz./Desert Vista) made two saves in the final 21:27 to seal the shutout. Rose allowed three goals and made nine saves in the first half and sophomore Katherine Cormier (San Diego, Calif./Westview) stopped five shots in the second half.
