Potsdam, NY – With a new career-high of 34 points, junior guard Devin Sorell surpassed the 1000-point mark for her career in style, helping the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team down Vassar College 81-75 in Liberty League action Saturday afternoon at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights improved to 14-9 overall and 9-5 in the Liberty League, taking sole possession of third place in the conference with two games remaining in the regular season. Vassar took a hit to its playoff hopes, but is still very much alive at 8-6 in conference games, along with two other teams, and 11-12 overall.

Vassar started strong with six of the first eight points in the opening two-plus minutes, but Clarkson responded with a 21-0 run over the next 5:21 to take a 23-8 lead. In that time, the Brewers committed seven turnovers and went 0-for-8 from the floor, while Clarkson scored steadily. The Knights enjoyed their best quarter of the season in the first against Vassar, putting up 30 in the opening 10 minutes. In the second quarter, Clarkson was still up by 18 after a Molly Stewart jumper with four minute expired, but Vassar responded with an 11-2 run over three minutes. The Brewers pulled to within seven near the end of the half, but Devin Sorell was fouled as time ran out, and the junior proceeded to make three more free throws to give Clarkson a 47-37 edge at the break.

Clarkson's edge dwindled to six points after a pair of free throws from Sophie Nick at the 4:35 mark in the third quarter, but by the end of the period the Knights were back up by nine. Vassar continued to chip away at the Knights advantage, dropping an 11-point deficit to just three points after a Nicole Teta 3-pointer with 2:49 to go, making the score 68-65. Sorell responded with a pair of jumpers from the baseline on Clarkson's next two possessions to push the lead back to seven, and though Teta hit another 3-pointer with 55 seconds remaining to cut things back to four, Clarkson made plenty of free throws down the stretch to secure the win.

Sorell entered the game needing just 13 points for 1000 in her career, and reached that point by the end of the first quarter. She finished with a career-high 34, shooting 9-for-20 from the field and 15-for-16 from the free throw line. Madison Shea added 12 points, six rebounds, and four assists, and Stephanie Grobe tossed in 11 points to go along with five assists. Alyssia Marsal also had six points, seven rebounds, five assists and four steals, while Molly Stewart scored nine points on 4-for-6 shooting in her first appearance as a non-starter. For Vassar, Ariella Rosenthal shot 8-for-17 from the field for a team-high 21 points, as well as eight rebounds, and Nicole Teta scored 18 points with four 3-pointers. Sophie Nick also had a near double-double on 14 points and eight boards, shooting 6-for-9 from the floor.
