Plattsburgh, NY - A huge third quarter and a record-tying performance from Devin Sorell allowed the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team to come away with a split on the weekend as the Golden Knights earned a 73-67 victory over Johnson State on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights improved to 3-1 on the season and will now get 10 days off before their next contest. Johnson State dropped to 1-3 on the season.

Clarkson jumped out to a five-point lead in the first 99 seconds of the game, but Johnson State rallied with a 17-6 run to enjoy its biggest lead of the game with 2:38 remaining in the first quarter (19-13). In the second quarter, Sorell started coming through with a barrage of scoring, tying the game up at 20-20 with a 3-pointer and then scoring the next 10 points for the Knights, pushing Clarkson to a 30-29 lead with a 13-9 run all by herself. She finished with 16 first-half points, but that strong effort, that gave Clarkson a 36-29 halftime lead, was just the beginning for the Knights.

The third quarter essentially began and ended with a 3-pointer from Allyson Buckner of Johnson State, but between it was all Clarkson. The Golden Knights had a 36-32 lead after Buckner's first 3-pointer, but then five different players sunk long-distance shots to give the Knights a 21-point cushion with a 19-2 run. Sorell buried her second 3-pointer of the period to push the lead to as many as 22, and a Madison Shea free throw with one second left on the clock allowed the Knights to hold an 18-point edge.

Despite the big run, the Badgers would not go away, slowly chipping away and coming back to within three points twice late in the game. Part of this was a strong effort of their own, but also Clarkson went through a long scoring drought, as Shea made a free throw at 5:25 to open the scoring and Clarkson didn't get a bucket until the 4:38 mark when Ashley Loggins made a shot. Fortunately for Clarkson, the groove down the stretch and hung on for a six-point win.

Sorell finished with a career-best 33 points, shooting 11-for-24 overall and 7-for-12 from the 3-point line, tying a record for distance shots set by Cara Manfredi just last season. Ashley Loggins finished with her fourth straight double-double to open the season, scoring 10 points to go along with 12 rebounds and six more steals.
