Plattsburgh, NY – Senior Devin Sorell made three 3-pointers in the second half and the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team buried seven shots from distance in the second half alone as the Golden Knights came away with a 64-59 win over Plattsburgh State in the consolation game of the Cardinal Classic on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights improved to 2-1 on the season and will face SUNY Canton on Tuesday evening at the Roos' House.

A slow start saw Clarkson trail by four in the first three minutes (7-3), but Molly Stewart nailed a 3-pointer at the 7:06 mark, sparking a strong run of shooting for the Knights. Rachel Marion hit two 3-pointers and Devin Sorell made a layup and a free throw to push the Knights to an eight-point advantage. Raeanna Dunn followed with another 3-pointer at the 2:10 mark for a 15-0 run in a five-minute stretch. Plattsburgh countered with a quick run of its own, ending the quarter on a 9-2 run to pull back to within three at the first break.

Clarkson maintained a modest advantage for the first few minutes of the second quarter, but a Bella DePasquale 3-pointer evened the score at 24-24 at the 6:20 mark and a few moments later Taylor Durnin made a layup to give Plattsburgh its first lead since midway through the first quarter (28-27). Clarkson countered with back-to-back baskets from Carly Assimon and another from Tricia Loso to reclaim the lead at 31-30 with 1:02 to go, but Frannie Merkel scored on the ensuing possession for Plattsburgh and the Cardinals ended the half with a 32-31 lead.

Clarkson shot 5-for-11 from the 3-point line in the first half, but was just 5-for-18 from inside the arc. Devin Sorell led the Knights with eight points in the first half while Taylor Durnin scored 11 for the Cardinals.

The Knights regained the lead almost immediately out of halftime and were led by Sorell's seven-point run over the next few minutes to gain a 38-34 lead. Up by five after a Madison Shea 3-pointer, Plattsburgh went on a 9-2 run to edge back up by two when Jordan Kastanis made a layup at the 3:24 mark. That lead for the Cardinals was short-lived, however, as Molly Stewart hit her second 3-poitner of the game with 52 seconds left in the third to put the Knights back up by one, 46-45.

The Cardinals pushed back, taking the lead 50-48 at 8:59 in the fourth on a 3-pointer from Anna Thompson, but Clarkson responded with a 3-pointer from Sorell on its next possession and the Knights wouldn't trail again. Stewart hit another 3-pointer with just under six minutes to go and Sorell and Earl each hit 3-pointers in the next four minutes to help Clarkson stretch the margin to seven points (62-55). Sorell hit a pair of free throws with a little over a minute to go and that provided enough of a cushion for Clarkson to hold on for the win.

Sorell scored 19 of her game-high 27 points in the second half, while Molly Stewart added 11 points and seven rebounds. Hannah Earl also chipped in nine points for the Knights. For Plattsburgh, Taylor Durnin and Frannie Merkel each scored 14 points. Durnin added six rebounds and five assists to her stat line, while Merkel also grabbed seven rebounds.
