POTSDAM, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam men's hockey team (2-5-2) scored three power-play goals on Tuesday night, but fell to Elmira College (2-7) 6-4 at Maxcy Ice Arena. Senior assistant captain Vinny Caligiuri (Shoreham, N.Y./Hartford Wolfpack), freshman forward Nick Keck (Holland, Pa./Odessa Jackalopes), senior assistant captain Alex Goodhue (Traverse City, Mich./Atlanta Jr. Knights) and junior forward Dylan Vander Esch (San Jose, Calif./Hartford Wolfpack) each scored for the Bears.

The Soaring Eagles got their only man advantage in the whole contest in the first period and made the most of it. Junior forward Tyler Theodoulou (Bedford, N.H./Boston Jr. Rangers) scored a power-play goal at the 7:54 mark to put Elmira up 1-0. Just 3:05 later, Caligiuri evened the score on a wrister from the slot with assists from sophomore defenseman Trevor Dennis (Rochester, N.Y./Buffalo Jr. Sabres) and freshman defenseman Sean Winikates (Scottsdale, Ariz./Philadelphia Jr. Flyers). Elmira outshot Potsdam 13-8 in the opening period, but the score remained 1-1 at the first intermission.

Theodoulou struck again just 2:01 into the second period to regain the lead for the Eagles. Elmira followed the tally with back-to-back penalties and Keck took advantage with his first collegiate goal. Freshman forward Tyler Young (Massena, N.Y./Kanata Lasers) and Dennis assisted on the goal. At 12:11, freshman defenseman Harry Kramer (Wexford, Pa./Connecticut Jr. Rangers) finished a give-and-go to put the Soaring Eagles up for good. Elmira couldn't stay out of the box and it kept the contest tight. While killing off the second of consecutive penalties late in the period, freshman forward Anthony Parrucci (Pittsburgh, Pa./Johnstown Tomahawks) stole the puck at the blue line and went in all by himself for a shorthanded goal that made it 4-2 at the 17:07 mark. Fortunately for the Bears, the power play wasn't over and Goodhue poked home a loose puck at the left side of the net at 18:33. Due to the power plays, Potsdam peppered Soaring Eagles freshman goalie Parker Butler (Summit, N.J./Chatham Maroons) with 20 shots in the second period, but trailed 4-3 after 40 minutes.

Again, Elmira scored early in the third period. Freshman forward Eric Bolden (Oswego, Ill./Nipawin Hawks) put the Soaring Eagles up 5-3 two minutes into the final stanza. It proved to be the game-winner. The Bears earned their fifth and final power play at 10:28 and 12 seconds later, Vander Esch finished a pass from senior forward Tommy Telesca (Selden, N.Y./New York Bobcats) in the slot. As time wound down, Potsdam struggled to find the equalizer. With about two minutes remaining, Bears junior goalie Brendan McMenimen (Merrimac, Mass./Islanders Hockey Club) began eyeing the bench for an extra attacker. However, Potsdam was unable sustain pressure in the offensive zone and he couldn't get off the ice. With 21 seconds remaining, sophomore defenseman Blake O'Neill (Fort Myers, Fla./Kingston Voyageurs) grazed the crossbar in the left corner of the net to close the scoring at 6-4.

McMenimen finished with 23 saves and Butler stopped 36 shots to earn the win.

Potsdam outshot Elmira 40-29 on the night and went 3-for-5 on the power play.

The Bears are now off until Friday, Dec. 2, when they head to No. 11 SUNY Plattsburgh for a 7 p.m. contest.
