Bennington, VT – Samantha Smith (Mooers Forks, NY) and Austin Johnston (Auburn, NY) led the SUNY Canton women's and men's cross country team's as both runners finished in the top 10 of their respective races at the Southern Vermont Invitational on Saturday.
Smith paced the women's side as she finished in fourth place individually out of the 65-runner field. The freshman covered the 5-kilometer course in 22:58, just over a minute behind the individual champion from Mount Saint Mary. Keara Byrne (Queensbury, NY) clocked a 24:11 to finish in 12th place.
Kim McCarthy (Ludlow, MA) and Rachel Youngers (Evans, NY) posted 26th and 28th place finishes, respectively. Patti Carpenter (Penfield, NY) rounded out the top 5 in a time of 27:55 for 38th place. Meanwhile, Laura DiFrenza (Salt Point, NY) and Bri Herd (Rochester, NY) crossed the line in 40th and 51st places, respectively.
Johnston strided to a 10th place finish for the men covering the hilly 5K course in 18:31. Tom Lauzon (Bombay, NY) was right on his heels earning 12th place out of the 64-runner field in a time of 18:35. Shawn Deibel (Albion, NY) and Antonio Kadylak (Johnson City, NY) grouped together both crossing the line in 19:38 in 27th and 28th places, respectively.
Matthew Lindke (Webster, NY) was the final scoring runner for the Roos in 45th place in 22:44. Bryant Cotey (Norwood, NY) and Josh May (Glenville, NY) followed him in consecutive order in 46th and 47th places to round out the top seven.
The men and women's cross country teams are back in action next Saturday at the Johnson State College Invitational.
