CANTON -- St. Lawrence University's women's soccer team took to heart a pre-game conversation with coach Franco Bari about finishing off its scoring chances prior to Saturday's game two of the Lotto Tournament against SUNY-IT.
Seven different players scored goals and the Saints scored four in each half en route a 8-0 win over SUNY-IT, pulling even on the season at 1-1-0 after the first weekend of competition.
"Prior to the match we had a conversation about finishing, which we lacked against Cortland...and we also discussed the importance of working hard for the entire match. In the first half of this game, we finished well, but it wasn't really until the second half that we picked up the work ethic. I am very proud of the effort and performance today...it is something we can build on," said Bari.
Stephanie Sayward scored two goals and had an assist and rookies Elena Dauphinais and Meghan Ryan each scored their first collegiate goal as the Saints cruised to the win.
Sophomore Julia Friesen opened the scoring just 4:32 into play when she scored on a header off an indirect cross by senior Elena Rogers. Rogers then scored from Sayward for her first of the year at 27:25 and Sayward scored her first of the game from Anna Kowalczyk just over four minutes later. First year Nyssa LaClair then set up Kowalczyk for a 4-0 Saint lead with just under five minutes to play in the first half.
Sayward scored her second of the game from Marcelle Justison five minutes into the second half with Brooke Hessney scoring unassisted seven minutes later for a 6-0 lead. Dauphinais scored her first goal with just under 10 minutes to play and classmate Laura Topf set up Ryan's first goal with 2:13 left for the 8-0 final.
A trio of goalkeepers combined for 15 saves for SUNYIT while Abby van Geldern had one save in 68:50 with sophomore Andrea Strauss playing the final 21 minutes.
SLU outshot SUNYIT 44-4 and had an 11-0 advantage in corner kicks.
