CANTON -- Senior midfielder Katie VanDeValk (Baldwinsville, NY) scored the lone goal in the 63rd minute of the game as the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team defeated Ohio Wesleyan 1-0 at the North Country Lotto Classic hosted by St. Lawrence University.
Clarkson improves to 1-0 on the season, while Ohio Wesleyan falls to 0-1. The Golden Knights will take on the John Jay Bloodhounds at 11:00 am tomorrow and the Battling Bishops will square off with the St. Lawrence Saints at 1:30 PM.
Both teams played very even throughout the game, with OW owning an 11-10 edge in shots. VanDeValk tallied the game-winner when she collected the ball off a deflection and chipped it home over OW goalkeeper Hannah Zacharias' head.
One of OW's best chances to score came with two minutes to play when Elizabeth Riggio gave a nice through ball to Jessie Huschart. Clarkson back Andrea Riedman (Kirkville, NY) recovered hard and got a piece of Huschart's shot, and Golden Knight goalkeeper Kim Kenline (Akron, OH) made the save.
