CANTON -- Rachael Smith scored the game-tying goal with less than 12 minutes to play and also had an assist to lead the St. Lawrence University women's hockey team in a 2-2 tie with Quinnipiac in an ECAC Hockey contest on Friday night at Appleton Arena.
With the point, the Saints (13-13-7 overall, 8-7-6 ECAC Hockey) moved into sole possession of fifth place in the conference standings, but can still finish anywhere from fifth to eighth after tomorrow's regular season finale, as Harvard, Quinnipiac and Rensselaer are all tied for sixth just one point back. The Bobcats moved to 12-16-5, 9-9-3.
"Tonight's game was what we've seen in the league all season," said St. Lawrence head coach Chris Wells '92. "It's no surprise that the standings are so tight, because there are a lot of good teams in the league this year. We came out with a good jump and scored early, and Quinnipiac responded. I was happy with how we came back after we got down in the third period to tie it up. No one has played as many close games as we have this season and it's been great preparation for this time of year."
The Saints took a 1-0 lead in the first period with a power play goal on a shot through a screen from the point by Lydia Grauer, with Smith and Amanda Butterfield picking up assists.
But Quinnipiac tied the game less than five minutes into the second, as Sarah Coutu-Godbout put home a rebound from point blank after a shot by Taylor House.
The Bobcats took a 2-1 lead early in the third period, with Randi Marcon finishing a nice feed across the crease by Melissa Samoskevich, but Smith was able to net the equalizer less than six minutes later, skating in from the left side and beating Quinnipiac goaltender Abbie Ives with a shot between the legs. Kalie Grant picked up an assist on the play.
Ives made 34 saves for the Bobcats, while Grace Harrison stopped 17 shots for the Saints.
The game extended the Saints' program record for overtime games in a season to 14; the NCAA record is 15, set by Boston University in 2009-10 and tied by Penn State last year.
St. Lawrence will close out the regular season against sixth-ranked Princeton on Saturday at 3 p.m. The Saints' senior class will be honored in a ceremony at the conclusion of the game.
