CANTON -- St. Lawrence University's women's soccer team shook off some first half doldrums, but was unable to come all the way back from a 2-0 deficit, sustaining their first loss of the season in a 2-1 win by Plattsburgh State on Sandy MacAllaster Field Tuesday afternoon.

Plattsburgh scored one goal late in the first half and added a second 13:17 into the second half to build its lead and while the Saints were able to get one back with just over eight minutes to play and had another great chance inside of two minutes, they could not pull even.

"Unfortunately, we came out very, very flat and as a result, Plattsburgh was beating us to a lot of balls and creating some good scoring opportunities for themselves," said Saint coach Franco Bari. "I thought our backs did a pretty good job of absorbing the pressure of their speed, and the second half we were an entirely different team...we came out to play and scored a great goal, but unfortunately ran out of time to complete the comeback. This game taught us a valuable lesson...come to play."

Plattsburgh had the better of the scoring chances in the first half, but the Saint defense kept the Cardinals off the board until the final minutes of the first half. Goalie Abby van Geldern made five first half saves and received some help from freshman defender Corinne Werner, who cleared a ball off the goal line in a flurry after a save 15 minutes into the game

The Cardinals broke the scoring ice with just 2:02 to play in the half as freshman forward Kayla Rabideau got a step on a Saint defender on the right side of the penalty area and placed a shot inside the far post as she was sliding to the turf. It was the second goal of the season for the Plattsburgh rookie. Plattsburgh finished the first half with a 13-5 advantage in total shot attempts and a 7-3 edge in shots on goal.

The Saints came on strong to start the second half, but the Cardinals went up 2-1 13:17 into the second half when Lindsey Keyser made a run from midfield and carried the ball into the box, completing a pretty cross to Kristie Pageau, who redirected the ball past van Geldern for the 2-0 lead.

The Saints, now 2-1, scored with 8:05 to play in regulation as sophomore Stephanie Sayward scored her third of the year off a corner kick and had an opportunity to tie the game on another corner with inside two minutes to play, but Plattsburgh goalie Alina Greiser knocked the corner kick away and Alex Troli's attempt to volley the rebound out of the air and into the net went over the crossbar.

Plattsburgh outshot the Saints 22-15 overall and each team had three corner kicks. Greiser finished with five saves for the Cardinals while van Geldern had seven stops for the Saints.
