POTSDAM -- The St. Lawrence University volleyball team rebounded from a 3-0 loss to Baruch earlier in the day as it swept past Cazenovia College in its final game of the North Country Classic.
The Saints gathered 18 service aces against the Wildcats, including eight from junior Kayla Twardzik, en route to the 3-0 victory (25-12, 25-13, 25-10). Senior co-captain Nyasha Miller earned a spot on the All-Tournament team as she recorded her 1,000th career dig, finishing the weekend with 53 digs and 46 kills.
"Overall I'm content with the weekend," said St. Lawrence Head Coach Shelly Roiger. "We could have certainly done better but it could have been worse. We faced some solid competition and played with good energy throughout the weekend. We have some big shoes to fill with our graduation from last year and I think this weekend was a good checkpoint to see where we are at in early September."
Miller led the Saints to victory over Cazenovia with seven kills, three aces, and five digs. Classmate Liz Grogan also added seven kills, while first-year student Ashley Richardson tallied five kills.
Earlier in the day against Baruch, the Bearcats narrowly took the first two sets by the scores of 26-24 and 26-24, and hung on for a 25-19 third set to earn the sweep, despite a late offensive surge by the Saints.
"Baruch was a good test for us and it certainly identified things that we need to work on," said Coach Roiger. "We were not able to set the tone for the match and even though we had opportunities to come out with victories in sets 1 and 2, we had some unforced errors that cost us."
Miller recorded 15 digs and added 14 kills against the Bearcats. Grogan tallied 15 kills and sophomore Anna Kassab dished out 36 assists in the Saint effort. Senior Katherine Pierce and sophomore Katie Prue added 13 and 11 digs, respectively.
The Scarlet and Brown move to 3-1 on the season and will travel to Plattsburgh State on Tuesday, Sept. 6 to take on the Cardinals. The match is schedule to get underway at 7:00 pm.
