CORTLAND -- The St. Lawrence University Saints volleyball team earned its first win of the season with a convincing 3-0 (25-16, 25-13, 25-8) sweep of the Montclair State Red Hawks Friday afternoon at the Cortland Classic. The squad then fell to SUNY Fredonia, 3-0 (18-25, 8-25, and 24-26) in the nightcap.

"I thought we took care of business against Montclair and did a nice job of competing with different people on the court versus a very good Fredonia program," Coach Roiger said.

Junior hitter Liz Grogan directed the offense against Montclair State with ten kills while senior setter Abby Rose contributed 22 assists. First-year student Katie Prue made her first collegiate appearance with the Saints, recording eight of the team's 11 service aces against the Red Hawks.

In the back court, junior Katherine Pierce led the Saints defense with 16 digs, followed closely by classmate Nyasha Miller with 15.

In the second match of the night, the Saints struggled to keep pace with a strong SUNY Fredonia team in the early going. Though St. Lawrence pushed their opponents in the third game of the match,SUNY Fredonia was able to earn the sweep with a narrow 26-24 win.

Grogan and Miller recorded seven kills apiece against the Blue Devils, while Rose again tallied 22 assists. Pierce gathered 21 digs in the Saints effort.
