CANTON -- First-year Katie Stames recorded her first collegiate goal on Friday afternoon to help the St. Lawrence women's soccer team defeat Plattsburgh 1-0 in the opening game of the North Country Classic.

With the win, the Saints extend their non-conference unbeaten streak to 11 games, dating back to September of 2012.

After a back-and-forth game in the opening part of the first half, Stames was finally able to break through in the 34th minute with the game-winning tally. Sophomore Taylor Goldsborough played a diagonal pass back to Stames at the top of the box and the Morrisville, Vermont native one-timed a shot high and hard past Cardinals goalkeeper Danielle Schmidtt to help the Saints to the win.

"While I was pleased with the result, we played rather flat at times," Head Coach Franco Bari said. "We did produce sound opportunities and while we preserves the shutout we still have much work to put in."

St. Lawrence outshot Plattsburgh 17-6, forcing Schmidtt to make seven saves. Junior goalkeeper Kelsey West finished with one save in the shutout.

The Saints will return to Sandy MacAllaster Field for a 3:30 pm contest against Colby-Sawyer to wrap up the 2014 North Country Classic. Plattsburgh will travel to Potsdam to take on Clarkson.
