ITHACA -- The St. Lawrence University men's tennis team improved to 3-1 on the season with a 6-3 victory over Ithaca on Saturday evening in Glazer Arena.
The Saints took a 2-1 lead after doubles and then used wins at the top three spots and the fifth spot to earn the victory.
In doubles action, John Megas and Robert Schmitz defeated David Andersen and Zach Lipson at one, 8-3. Paul Barrett and Michael Hayden cruised past Chris Hayes and Griffin Reid at two, 8-1. Thomas Luchars and Rhonny Rosario were edged at three by Justin Levine and Derryk Williams, 8-5.
In singles play, Hayden, Megas, and Schmitz earned victories at the top three spots. Hayden beat Levine, 6-3, 6-2, while Megas topped Reid, 6-2, 6-3. Schmitz was victorious in three sets over Lipson, 7-6 (12), 1-6, 6-2. Rosario clinched the victory for the Saints, defeating Andersen at five, 6-2, 6-3. Thomas Luchars lost a three-set match to David Keltz at six, 2-6, 6-1, 11-9, while Hayes topped Paul Barrett at four, 6-2, 6-0.
The Saints will look to go 2-0 on the weekend as they host Division II opponent St. Michael's College today at the Newell tennis courts.
