ITHACA -- The St. Lawrence University men's tennis team competed in the first day of the ITA Northeast Regional.
Both doubles teams earned victories on Friday but fell in the round of 16 on Saturday.
First-year student Robert Schmitz and sophomore John Megas came out victorious in doubles play on Friday in a tight 9-8 (7-5) decision against opponents Jeremy Mancus and Ryan McCormick (Nazareth).
They battled Jonah Epstein and Alec Hoblitzell (Skidmore) in the round of 16 on Saturday but fell by the score of 8-4.
Also earning doubles victories on Friday were freshman Paul Barrett and senior captain Michael Hayden.
The duo defeated Peter Dumas and Brian Redder (Hartwick) by the score of 8-2 and but fell to Michael Fields and Bruce Grant (Hobart) on Saturday, 8-5.
Schmitz also advanced in singles action with a win over Anthony Kim (Rensselaer) 6-1, 6-1 before dropping a close 7-6 (7), 6-4 match to Benjamin Foran (Stevens) in the Round of 16.
Hayden and Megas both dropped tight singles matches to opponents from Skidmore and Vassar, respectively.
