SLU men's basketball team earns 61-54 victory over Vassar

POUGHKEEPSIE -- The St. Lawrence University men's basketball team earned a 61-54 victory over Liberty League opponent Vassar College on Friday night.

St. Lawrence, led by four in double-figures, improves to 9-8 and 5-4 in the league.

Junior guard Kyle Miller had 13 points for the Saints, including a perfect 7-of-7 from the free throw line. Senior guards Ralph Temgoua and Terry Parham added 12 points apiece and combined for 10 rebounds, five assists and five steals.

Sophomore forward Janpeter Brase added 10 points and six rebounds. The loss drops the Brewers to 6-9 overall and 2-4 in Liberty League play.

It was a back-and-forth first half that had six ties and eight lead changes that saw the Brewers take a 32-30 lead at halftime.

The home team led as many as five points after junior guard Jon Herzog made two free throws for a 29-24 lead with 4:08 remaining in the first half.

The second half featured timely shooting from both teams that produced 12 ties, the last coming at 50-50 with 5:47 to play when Brase connected on a layup in the paint. Over the next 2:19, St. Lawrence scored seven straight points, jumping ahead 57-50 following two free throws from Miller, and put the game out of reach for Vassar.

St. Lawrence, which owned a 35-31 advantage in rebounds, scored 21 points off turnovers compared to Vassar's 14 points.

The Saints finished shooting 44% from the floor while the Brewers shot 36%. St. Lawrence will play Bard tomorrow at 4:00 in a Liberty League contest.
