ONEONTA -- The St. Lawrence University field hockey team was handed its first loss of the 2011 season on Sunday, as Oneonta State used a 25-13 advantage in shots en route to a narrow 4-3 victory.

Sophomore goalie Nicole Matos finished with a career-high 15 saves for the Scarlet and Brown.

The win kept the Red Dragons unbeaten on the young season at 2-0, while the Saints fall to 1-1 a day after topping Utica College.

Matos did an excellent job for the Saints, as she piled up 10 first half saves to keep her team in the game tied at intermission. Megan Warning opened the scoring at 11:15 for Oneonta, but St. Lawrence rookie Carly Stine scored her second goal of the weekend at 22:54 to tie the contest at 1-1. Stine was able to tip a pass from senior Emily Riley past Oneonta keeper Tess Tracy for her second collegiate goal.

The Red Dragons, who outshot St. Lawrence 12-4 in the first half, were finally able to change their fortunes against Matos in the early stages of the second period. Andrea Day scored her first goal of the season for a 2-1 lead at 43:06, followed only 4:01 later by Ashley Johnson's first of the campaign and a 3-1 lead.

St. Lawrence junior Ashley Ferenczy got her team back to within a goal at 3-2 at the 52:58 mark with her first tally of the season. The Williamsville, NY native scored on the backside post to draw her team one closer.

However, Morgan would put the game away for the Red Dragons when she scored her second goal of the game with only 2:30 remaining in regulation. Stephanie Fiske got the play started on a corner, and Morgan finished for a 4-2 lead.

Riley would score an unassisted goal with: 04 seconds remaining to cap the game's scoring at 4-3.

Tracy closed with five saves for Oneonta State, which also finished with a 9-5 edge in penalty corners.

The Saints will be in action again on Saturday, September 10 when the team squares off against Hartwick College in Oneonta, NY. Game time is scheduled for 12:00pm.
