Saratoga Springs, NY - Sophomore Leighann Tomita (Cerritos, CA) made four 3-pointers en route to a game-high 18 points, but a late run from Skidmore College defeated the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team 58-45 in Liberty League action Tuesday evening.
The Golden Knights fell to 2-14 overall and 0-8 in the Liberty League, while Skidmore improved to 7-1 in conference games and 9-8 overall. Clarkson is off this weekend, but will take on St. Lawrence University next Tuesday in Canton.
Throughout the contest, the Knights were within striking distance of the Thoroughbreds. The two teams both started off slow, but were knotted up at 12-12 with just under 10 minutes to go. However, a six-plus minute stretch saw Skidmore go on a 15-2 run for a double-digit lead as the Knights were unable to keep up, going 0-for-6 from the floor with five turnovers in the run. Starting the second half, Clarkson scored the first five points and pulled within six points. From there, the Knights and Skidmore played even, with Clarkson picking up a point along the way. The Knights trailed by only five (46-41) with 8:03 to go, but an extended scoreless stretch by Clarkson allowed the Thoroughbreds to pull away, with a 12-4 run wrapping up the contest.
Tomita scored 18 points, shooting 5-for-9 from the field and 4-for-6 from beyond the 3-point arc, to go along with five rebounds, and freshman Ashley Loggins (Albany, NY) scored 16 points with eight rebounds and three assists. Classmate Isabella Esposito (Essex, VT) pitched in nine points and seven boards for Clarkson.
Skidmore was led by Angela Botiba, who had 12 points and seven rebounds. Overall, Skidmore made eight 3-point field goals in the game.
