Short leads Saints men's soccer past Potsdam

First-year student Chandler Short scored two goals, one in each half, to help the St. Lawrence men's soccer team shutout SUNY Potsdam 2-0 on Friday afternoon. It is the first collegiate shutout for sophomore goalkeeper Sean Houston, who made his third consecutive start in place of an injured Aaron Costello.

Short scored his first of the day in the 34th minute off a great feed from fellow first-year student and former San Diego Surf Academy teammate Luis Jimenez. Jimenez deked a Bears defender at the top of the box and hit Short who was cutting from right to left 12 yards out. Short settled the ball, turned and put a shot across the goal mouth that snuck past goalkeeper Nick Davies and found the lower right corner of the net to give the Saints a 1-0 lead.

In the 57th minute, he pushed the lead to 2-0 with his third goal of the season after crashing the net to collect a rebound six yards out.

Junior Ryan Grant's initial shot from the right side of the box was stopped by a sprawling Davies, but the Bears keeper pushed the rebound out into the middle and right onto Short's foot for an easy finish.

The San Diego, California native is now tied with junior Morgan Smith for the team lead in goals.

The Saints, now 5-2 on the season, were missing 10 players because of injuries on Friday, including several veteran starters, but still managed to play their possession style; as they controlled the pace of the game for most of the day and remained strong in the backfield to quell most Potsdam attacks before they even entered the box.

Potsdam saw its best chances with just over 12 minutes remaining in the second half on three consecutive corner kicks. Houston tipped the first behind the net and out of trouble and then made two point blank saves from the posts to preserve the shutout.

Houston finished with five saves, while Davies made seven stops for the Bears (5-2-1).
