Second half surge lifts Saints women's basketball to 71-49 victory over Potsdam

An 18-4 run to open the second half helped the St. Lawrence University women's basketball team earn a 71-49 victory over Potsdam State on Tuesday evening in the Burkman Gymnasium. Senior co-captains Katie Edgerton and Casey Capello combined for 25 points, while 13 other Saints put points on the board.

St. Lawrence improves to 4-4 on the season and will begin its Liberty League schedule on January 6th at Union.

After trading leads in the opening minutes, the Saints pulled away with an 18-4 run fueled by sophomore Cassie St. Hilaire. The Saints led by as many as 18 points at 32-14 with under 6:00 minutes remaining in the half. A jumper by sophomore Jessica Kouzan at 1:26 brought the Bears to within eight points, however senior Iris Santoni made two free throws and hit a buzzer beating jumper to give the Saints a 38-26 advantage at halftime.

St. Lawrence ignited for an 18-4 run to open the second half, building a 56-32 advantage on a layup and free throw by first-year student Maddy Wetterhahn at 9:46. Potsdam would not come closer than 18 points for the remainder of the game as the Saints closed out the 71-49 victory.

Edgerton finished with 14 points and five rebounds, while Capello added 11 points, including three 3-pointers. Santoni recorded six points and five assists and Wetterhahn had seven points for the Saints. Kouzan and junior Katy Briedis each scored 10 points to lead the Bears.

The Saints held advantages in both points off turnovers (34-10) and bench points (29-13).
