Second half goal for Oswego pushes Knights to 1-0 women's soccer defeat

Potsdam, NY – Scoring chances were few and far between for both the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team and visiting Oswego State, but the Lakers were able to convert on one of their chances midway through the second half to gain a 1-0 win over the Golden Knights Friday afternoon at Hantz Turf Field.

The Golden Knights saw their non-league record evened at 2-2-2, while the Lakers remained unbeaten at 3-0-1. Clarkson will take on Utica College on Saturday afternoon.

There wasn't much in the way of offense in the first half as the two teams had trouble getting into the box for closer looks. Camryn Careccia had a soft attempt in the first 10 minutes that was easily scooped up by Oswego keeper Emma Allen, and Lynsey Roth of Oswego took a lofting 28-yard shot from the wing that nestled neatly in Elyse Green's arms at the 30-minute mark. However, the Knights did have a solid scoring chance with about five minutes to go when Madison Kather found herself with a one-on-one with Allen up close. Kather struck the ball left-footed, but Allen was able to deny the shot when she stayed put instead of diving to her left to protect the far post.

Both teams combined for just two shots on goal in the second half, but one of those found the back of the net. In the 67th minute, Gabby Corrente found some space in the middle at about 10 yards out and was able to maintain possession despite some pressure, sending a medium-paced groundball to the left of Elyse Green for what proved to be the game-winner.

Oswego did everything it could to keep possession late, with safe passes and holding it deep in the corners, though Clarkson had a few runs and opportunities. However, none came through to tie things up as the Knights came up short.

Clarkson held a small 8-5 edge in shots, with each getting three attempts between the posts. Oswego had the game's lone corner kick. Green made two saves for Clarkson, while Allen stopped three shots for the shutout.
