Seaway Valley Venom defeated in Empire Football League home opener in Massena 27-0

MASSENA -- Seaway Valley Venom were defeated 27-0 in their Empire Football League home opener July 9 against the Plattsburgh North Stars at Massena High School’s Mike Nichols Field.

Attendance was 287.

The Plattsburgh squad scored 6 points in the first quarter, 14 in the second, 7 in the third, and both sides went scoreless in the fourth.

The game had to be called in the fourth quarter due to lightning.

“The atmosphere tonight was fantastic,” said Head Coach Elijah Winfrey. “Even though we lost it is very evident to us that we have improved in all phases since last season. I’m very proud of my guys and I look forward to growing as a coach with them.”

The next Venom's game is Saturday, July 16 at 7 p.m. in Massena against the Mohawk Valley Titans.

Big plays for the Venom were a 21-yard run in the third quarter by quarterback Corey Campeau. This run broke the team record for longest rush which was previously 15 yards. Another big play was in Plattsburgh’s first drive. Venom cornerback Devon Delaney picked off Tre Bucci’s pass and returned it for 15 yards. Abe Gravell and Evan Mannix recovered fumbles for the Venom. Dakota Vallance and Jeremey Bailey forced two additional fumbles.

The Venom fielded a team of 22 players against Plattsburgh who brought 40-plus players to the game. Kicker Mike Horth also broke a team record by kicking a 56 yard punt, the previous record was 28 yards.
