Seaway Smash Volleyball Club is ready to launch its second season and continues to grow with competitive volleyball in the Seaway Valley.

The club will again be competing in the Iroquois Empire Volleyball Association (IREVA) throughout eastern New York.

“Last year we started the club with the understanding that volleyball isn’t as big as soccer or basketball in the North Country, but we were going to start changing that,” said club founder and director Scott Wilhelm. “With our open house coming up this weekend, we have more than doubled the number of girls who were interested last year.”

With the increased interest, Seaway Smash is also increasing their coaching staff. Returning as the club’s coaching director is Elizabeth Testani. Joining the coaching staff includes SLU assistant coach Kristin Heidt, SLU senior Cristina Deschaine, SUNY Canton freshman Peyton Robinson, SUNY Canton sophomore Kristyn Sengillo, and JCC freshman Dia MacKay.

The new coaches bring to the club more years of coaching at the college level, as well as club coaching and playing experience, Wilhelm said. “Our players are going to get to learn from coaches who have been successful at the college and club levels, and they’re going to have the opportunity to learn from what they’ve learned and experienced.”

Player’s commitment to the club will include practice twice a week, in Canton and Lisbon, plus scrimmages and four to five tournaments around New York and Ontario, which will start in November and will run through May.

The open house is on Saturday, Oct. 10 at the Lisbon School gym from 2 to 4 p.m. All players interested should attend with their parents. Those who cannot attend but are still interested can contact the club at seawaysmash@gmail.com and get more info at http://www.seawaysmash.com.

Tryouts will then be on the next two Saturdays, Oct. 17 and 24 at Lisbon School from 2 to 5 p.m.
