Scott’s Top-5 finish paces Saints in Slalom at UVM

The St. Lawrence University alpine ski teams completed competition at the 2013 UVM Carnival, racing in the slalom on Saturday at Mount Mansfield. Sophomore Graham Scott logged his second career top-5 finish, leading the men's team to fourth place in the standings.

Scott was fifth overall thanks to an outstanding second run, closing in a combined time of 1:48.81. Rookie Nick Stenicka and junior Nick Scalia rebounded from a pair of DNF's on Friday by scoring for St. Lawrence in the slalom. Stenicka was 13th in 1:50.75, while Scalia closed out the scoring with 84.0 points by finishing in 22nd place.

Junior Ben DeFlavio was 27th on Saturday, while Dustin Martin, the team's top finisher on Friday, and graduate student Jeremy Lawless did not finish.

Meanwhile, the Saints' women's team, which was fourth in the giant slalom yesterday, was 10th in the standings in the slalom. All three of the point scorers from Friday, Ashley-Kate Durham, Allison Visconti and Ciar Colgan, did not finish on Saturday.

Sophomores Maria Hillenbrand and Kelly Appenzeller finished in 33rd and 35th place, respectively, pacing the St. Lawrence women's team while rookie Amie Lonza's 38th place showing capped the team's scoring.

The University of New Hampshire edged Colby College by 1.5 points to claim the men's team title, while Dartmouth and UVM tied on the women's side. Travis Dawson of UVM won the men's slalom while his teammate Kristina Riis-Johannessen claimed the women's race after a runner-up finish on Friday.

The 2013 UVM Carnival will officially be completed when the Nordic races are held on February 2 and 3. The St. Lawrence alpine teams will be in action again next weekend when the Saints host the 2013 SLU Carnival at Whiteface Mountain in Lake Placid, NY. The giant slalom will be held on Friday, January 18 while the slalom follows on Saturday.
