Schmalz, Taussig pace Saints women's lacrosse in opening win

First-Year Kayla Schmalz came off the bench to turn in a big performance in her first collegiate game and sophomore Kiera Taussig pitched in with three goals as St. Lawrence University's women's lacrosse team gave head coach Ashley Pike her first collegiate victory with a 10-6 win over Castleton on Sunday.

The Saints and Spartans squared off at the University of Vermont in Burlington in the season opener for each.

Schmalz scored three goals, had six ground balls and caused three turnovers while Taussig had four caused turnovers to go along with her three goals in the win. Kate Auer led Castleton with three goals and an assist.

The Saints never trailed in the game against Castleton, which is coached by former Saint player Hannah Corkery. Castleton was within a goal at 4-3 with 5:06 to go in the first half, but Taussig and Schmalz scored to finish the half and Abigail Owens and Taussig scored to start the second half, springing the Saints to a 8-3 lead.

Castleton got within two at 8-5 in the second half, but Schmalz scored two goals just 30 seconds apart to make it a 10-5 game in the final minutes and seal the Saint win.

SLU outshot the Spartans 25-13 and had 20 on goal to seven for Castleton. SLU went one for five in free position shots while Castleton was one for three. The Saints had a 27-25 edge in ground balls and caused 16 turnovers in the win. Goalie Adden Cunningham made one save for the win while Meghan Els had 10 saves for Castleton.

Owen finished with two goals and an assist, Ashley Norris had two goals and Jill Carlton added an assist for the Saints. Emma Garfield had a solid performance defensively with five ground balls and three caused turnovers.

The Saints are scheduled to play Brockport in their home opener on March 12 at 4 p.m.
