Hoboken, NJ – Travis Schindler (West Islip, NY) and Wilson Matos (Brooklyn, NY) each hit home runs but the SUNY Canton baseball team dropped a 12-3 contest to host Stevens Institute of Technology on Saturday.
The Roos (4-12, 0-3 Empire 8) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Matos hit a one out homer, his team-leading fourth dinger of the season. The Ducks (10-8, 3-0 E8) answered with four runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 4-1 lead after one.
Schindler drove home Brandon Welch (Constable, NY) on a fielder's choice in the second, but Stevens responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning and brought a pair of runs across in both the third and fourth innings to open up a commanding 11-2 lead heading to the fifth.
Schindler recorded his second RBI of the game leading off the fifth with a solo shot to right center but that would conclude the SUNY Canton scoring as the Ducks tacked on a run in the sixth for the 12-3 final.
Dan Coant (Fulton, NY) took his first loss of the season pitching into the second inning. The Roos used four pitchers in relief. Greg Jakusik earned his first win of the season on the rubber for the Ducks.
Jayson Yano, Garrett Wells, Nick Sieber, P.J. Wiegartner and Michael Mule all drove in two runs each for Stevens.
The baseball team will visit will hit the road next weekend for a weekend conference series at Houghton College. The teams will play a single game on Friday at 3 p.m. followed by a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 12 p.m.
