Sayward's goal for Saints women's soccer team upends 16th ranked Union 1-0

Stephanie Sayward scored with 16:45 remaining in regulation to lift the St. Lawrence women's soccer team to a 1-0 Liberty League victory over #16 Union College at College Park Friday. The Saints improved to 6-3-2 overall and 3-1-1 in the league while the Dutchwomen fell to 2-2 in the league and had a six game winning streak snapped to fall to 12-2 overall.Sayward turned around two defenders five yards out and fired inside Simone's right post for the eventual game winner at 73:15. It was her second score of the season and both are game winners.

Union's Jennifer Mansfield had the game's first scoring chance, threading through the St. Lawrence defense for a shot just outside the six yard box that deflected just wide of the net at 22:56 of the first half.

Union goalkeeper Mia Simone came up with a great save at 36:07, stopping St. Lawrence's McKenzie Collins from five yards out to keep the game scoreless in the first half.

With 37:50 left in the second half, Stephanie Sayward took a pass from the left corner and got a shot off point blank in front of the Union net that was stopped by Simone. With 27:45 remaining in regulation, Union had a glistening chance but a header on the doorstep by Mollie Gilchrest when just high over the crossbar. With 21:59 left in the second, the Saints' Mackenzie Collins had a drive from 15 yards out on the left side but Simone was right there to stop it near her left post.

Union outshot St. Lawrence, 13-8 including 12-5 in the first half. Both teams had seven fouls and the hosts registered nine corners to the guests' three. Abby van Geldern made six saves for St. Lawrence while Simone stopped four for Union.

The Dutchwomen host Clarkson Saturday at 2 p.m. at College Park, while the Saints play at RPI Saturday at 2 p.m.
