Sophomore Lizzy Saward scored one goal and assisted on another and senior goalkeeper Nicole Matos made 15 saves for her second shutout of the year as St. Lawrence University's field hockey team evened its Liberty League record at 1-1 with a 2-0 win at Rensselaer on Saturday.
The Saints, now 3-6 overall, jumped out to a 1-0 lead 14:22 into the game as Saward put away a cross from Carly Dziekan for her fourth goal of the season and the Saints added an insurance goal 22:47 into the second half when Kara Pelosi tipped in an initial shot by Ali Ferenczy off Saward's penalty corner feed. It was Pelosi's second goal of the year.
Matos, who has been in double digits in saves in six of nine starts thus far this season, recorded her second shutout in the last three starts, making 10 saves in the first half and five in the second.
RPI, 3-7, 0-4, outshot the Saints 16-3 in the first half and had nine penalty corners to none for the Saints, but thanks to Matos and the Saint defense, SLU came away with their 1-0 lead. The second half was closer to even statistically, RPI holding a 10-5 edge in overall shots and the two teams even at 4-4 in penalty corners. RPI ended up with a 26-8 overall advantage in shots and a 13-4 margin in penalty corners. RPI goalie Hannah Clough had five saves for the Engineers.
SLU returns to Liberty League action at Union and Vassar Oct. 11-12.
