POTSDAM, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam softball team (7-13, 1-11 SUNYAC) rebounded from an 18-0 game one loss to defeat Oswego State (7-13, 4-6) 3-1 in the second contest. Bears freshman pitcher Jordan Sarat shut down the Laker bats in game two, tying her career-high with seven strikeouts, and giving Potsdam its first SUNYAC win of the season. Senior captain Heather Johnson drove in the game-winning run with a triple in the bottom of the fifth.

Oswego jumped on Potsdam from the start of the opener. Already up 1-0 in the top of the first, freshman first baseman Alexis Nasca hit a two-run double to the left-center field gap to put the Lakers up 3-0. In the second inning, junior third baseman Dee Apps cleared the bases with a triple off the right field fence for a 6-0 Oswego advantage. The Lakers broke the game open in the third inning with clutch hitting and two Potsdam errors to tack on seven more runs. Oswego added five more in the top of the fifth to close the scoring at 18-0. The Bears had two runners on in the third and left the bases loaded in the fourth, but couldn't get a timely hit.

Junior pitcher Ashley Thayer allowed nine runs, eight earned, in two and a third innings to drop to 3-5 on the season. Her sister, Laker senior pitcher Sarah (3-5), allowed two hits in three scoreless innings for the victory.

Apps was 3-4 with three runs scored and four runs batted in. Nasca was also 3-4 with two RBI's and a run scored. Potsdam was held to four hits on the day, including a long double off the bat of freshman designated player Katie Marsman in the bottom of the fifth.

Oswego scored quickly in the second game as well. Junior center fielder Sammie Schroeter drove in junior second baseman Katie Bredin with a sacrifice fly in the top of the first for a 1-0 Laker lead. Sarat pitched out of a one-out bases loaded jam in the top of the third by striking out two Lakers back-to-back. Potsdam loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the inning, but had a runner doubled-off at second after a fly out to left field. Then Johnson hit her two-run triple to right field to give the Bears the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth at 2-1. Thayer then drove in Johnson to make it 3-1 with a sacrifice fly off her sister, who had just relieved Nasca for Oswego. The Lakers threatened in the top of the seventh with back-to-back one-out singles, but Sarat fielded two ground outs to slam the door.

Sarat improved to 2-7 with the seven k's. Nasca (4-7) was tagged with the loss, allowing three earned runs on three hits in four and a third innings pitched. Bredin was 2-4 to lead the Lakers offensively.

The Bears are back in action tomorrow as they host St. Lawrence University at 3 p.m. Potsdam split with the Saints in Canton on April 4.
