POUGHKEEPSIE -- The St. Lawrence University women's tennis team fell to nationally-ranked #27 Vassar in the Liberty League Tournament Semifinal Friday at the Josselyn Tennis Courts.
The Saints, ranked #16 in the Northeast, conclude their season with a 13-4 record.
St. Lawrence had a 2-1 lead after doubles competition, but Vassar won four singles matches to bring the match to decision. First-year student Elkie Vandenbeemt teamed up with senior Hillary Drewry to edge Joy Backer and Ava Sadeghi at No. 1 doubles, 9-8 (7-2).
First-year students Anna Young and Olivia Arroyo saved three match points before coming back to beat Hannah Van Demark and Lindsay Kantor at No. 3, 9-8 (7-4).
At singles, Jennifer Beckerman topped Drewry at No. 1 (6-2, 6-1), while Vandenbeemt fell to Sadeghi, 6-0, 6-3 at No. 2. Junior Shannon Murphy lost a 6-0,6-0 decision at No. 5 and Young was defeated at No. 6, 6-2,6-3.
Arroyo was leading Backer in a third set at No. 3, 6-4, 5-7, 3-2 when the match was decided, while junior Elizabeth Geer was down in the third set of her No. 4 match with Samantha Shapiro, 6-1, 2-6, 3-4.
