The St. Lawrence women's tennis team improved to 9-2 in dual matches this season with a pair of wins against regionally-rank University of Wisconsin-La Crosse and Stevens Institute of Technology on Thursday afternoon.
The Saints edged UW 5-4 in the morning match; splitting singles and taking two of three doubles matched to earn the win.
Seniors Elkie Vandenbeemt, Olivia Arroyo and Samantha Miller each won their singles matches, with Vandenbeemt edging UW's top player Bridget Bellissimio 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1. Arroyo won 6-4, 6-4 at No. 2 and Miller 6-3, 6-0 at No. 6.
Fellow senior Anna Young teamed with Georgia Comber for a hard-earned 9-8 (4) win in the second doubles position, while Hallie Young and Emily Wyman claimed their No. 3 doubles match by a score of 8-4 to help the team to the win.
The Saints cruised to a 9-0 win over Stevens in their second match of the day, as Vandenbeemt picked up a 6-3, 6-2 victory at No. 1 singles, marking the first time she has beaten Jessica Bourque in her career. She and McNeal also came from down 6-5 in No. 1 doubles to earn an 8-6 win.
First-year Lia Petersen and junior Bridget Fleming also found themselves in the win column on Thursday afternoon with wins at No. 5 (6-0, 6-2) and No. 6 (6-1, 6-2) singles.
Fleming also paired with fellow New Mexico native Miller for an 8-4 win at No. 3 doubles.
The Saints will close out their Florida schedule with a 10:00 a.m. match against Hamilton on Friday morning.
