Saints women's tennis outlasts Engineers, fall to Thoroughbreds

The St. Lawrence University women's tennis team split its weekend matches against Liberty League opponents as it outlasted Rensselaer 5-4 on Friday but fell to nationally-ranked #17 Skidmore on Saturday. The Saints, regionally-ranked #17, moved to 4-4 on the season.

In Friday's match, St. Lawrence won two doubles and three singles, including two in third sets, to defeat regionally-ranked #19 RPI. With the match tied 4-4, it came down to the last match on court between St. Lawrence's Morgan McNeal and RPI's Christina Ciamarra at two.

After dropping the first set 3-6, McNeal was down 6-5 in the second set tiebreaker and saved match point before taking the set. She came through for the Saints in the decisive third set 6-0 to win the match 3-6, 7-6 (6), 6-0 and secure the Saints' 5-4 victory.

The Saints broke out to a 2-1 lead after doubles play, taking the second and third match. McNeal and Elizabeth Geer defeated Jessica Buckley and Emily Laullaird, 8-4, at two and Olivia Arroyo and Sami Miller topped Brianna Dickie and Emily Haldenberg, 8-2, at three.In singles action, the two teams split matches at five and six which put the Saints ahead 3-2. St. Lawrence's Shannon Murphy beat Jessica Buckley at five, 6-4, 7-5, but RPI's Haldenberg defeated Samantha Miller at six, 6-2, 6-4.

RPI followed with wins at three and four to pull ahead 4-3 with only two matches left on court. Elkie Vandenbeemt defeated Casey Olsen at one, 3-6, 7-6 (5), 6-0, to tie the match before McNeal clinched the Saints' victory at two.

In Saturday's match, the nationally-ranked Skidmore team proved too strong for the Saints as the Thoroughbreds earned the 9-0 sweep in Saratoga Springs, NY.
