The St. Lawrence women's tennis team will play in its first Liberty League championship since 2006 after holding off William Smith for a 5-2 win in the conference semifinal at Cornell's Reis Tennis Center in Ithaca, N.Y. on Saturday afternoon.
First-year Carly Jefferson's win at No. 6 in the third set was the deciding match in the Saints win. She rebounded after a 1-6 loss in the first set to win 6-3 in the second and battle for a 7-5 win in the third to lift St. Lawrence to the championship.
The Saints led 2-1 after doubles with an 8-0 win at No. 2 by Hallie Young and Emily Wyman and an 8-6 win at No. 3 by Lia Petersen and Jefferson.
In singles, Georgia Comber was the first to finish with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 3 to increase the Saints lead to 3-1. Morgan McNeal followed with a straight-set win at No. 1, 6-3, 6-4.
William Smith took the next singles match at No. 2, before Jefferson closed it out with her win in the sixth spot.
The matches at No. 4 and No. 5 singles for Young and Petersen were also in the third set at the time of decision.
The Saints will await the winner of the Vassar vs. Skidmore match to determine who they will play for the Liberty League Championship on Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m.
