The St. Lawrence University women's squash team went 2-0 in day one of the Bard Round Robin Tournament on Friday. The Saints, who ranked #28 in the pre-season poll, posted a 5-4 victory over #25 William Smith before blanking the University of Rochester 9-0 in the night cap.
First-year student Val Quan, sophomore Brigitte Tousignant, juniors Brittany Coxe and Carolyn Fisher, and senior Corey McHugh were each double-winners on the day.
In the opening match, Tousignant, Quan, Coxe, McHugh and Fisher earned the wins to edge the Herons. Tousignant beat Rachel Newman at one, 3-0 (11-7, 11-4, 11-6), while Quan defeated Olivia Beckwith 3-1 (11-9, 11-13, 14-12, 11-7). At five, Coxe beat Anne Habecker 3-1 (11-6, 11-6, 5-11, 16-14). McHugh topped Justine Shank 3-1 at six after falling in the first set (7-11, 11-4, 12-10, 12-10), and Fisher swept Molly Doran at seven to bring the score to 5-4.
In the evening match against Rochester, St. Lawrence did not drop a single set. Tousignant, senior Frances Robinson and Quan were at the top of the lineup, while first-year student Sarah Neilson, Coxe and McHugh posted wins in the middle of the lineup. Fisher, junior Liz Levering and sophomore Bobbi Lesser rounded out the scoring with wins at seven through nine.
The Saints will take on the Brewers of Vassar tomorrow morning at 10:30am in their last match of the Round Robin.
