First year Hannah Arment scored her first collegiate goal and senior Hannah Merriam scored her second goal of the season to lead the St. Lawrence University women's soccer team to a 2-1 win over SUNY Oswego Saturday afternoon at Sandy MacAllaster Field during Homecoming Weekend. Tori Daley added an assist, as did Kaleigh White and Katie Stames.
Arment's goal put the Saints on the board in the 41st minute of play. Daley crossed the ball over midfield and it was all Arment from then on. The Saints finished with a 29-12 overall shot advantage, including 16 shots in the first half, and held a 16-7 edge in shots on goal.
"The team played with a lot of desire today," said head coach Franco Bari. "We really had to grind in order to preserve the win, and we did just that. Oswego was aggressive and certainly applied a lot of pressure towards the end of the second half but we absorbed it well."
With the Saints leading 1-0, Merriam tallied her second goal of the season with help and a sliding pass from White and Stames out in front of Lakers' goalkepper Emma Allen.
In a comeback attempt, Lynsey Roth fed Alexa Restante a pass up the middle of the field to close the gap to just one for the Lakers during the 57th minute of play.
Saints' goalkeeper Samantha Allen finished the game with six saves, while SUNY Oswego's Allen recorded 14.
"It was a great weekend overall and just what we needed to prepare for conference play," Bari added.
The Saints improved to 4-2 on the season with today's win, while SUNY Oswego dropped to 3-1-1 with the loss.
St. Lawrence will face off against SUNY Plattsburgh Tuesday evening before they hit the road to Union and RPI for their first weekend of conference play.
