Saints women's rowing beat Skidmore, fall to fifth-ranked Ithaca in spring opener
The St. Lawrence University women's rowing team opened its spring season with a win in the varsity four, a win over Skidmore in the varsity eight petite final, and a very competitive second-place finish in the novice eight in a four-team regatta hosted by Ithaca College on the Cayuga Inlet on Saturday.
The Saints, who had their first two regattas of the spring cancelled due to inclement weather and dangerous conditions on the water, faced a head wind that grew stronger in the second 1,000 meters, then tapered towards the end of the course. The varsity eight defeated Skidmore in the petite final by nearly a minute after falling to fifth-ranked Ithaca in the morning. The novice eight was less than two seconds behind Ithaca to finish second, and the Saints capped the day with an 18.3-second victory over Ithaca in the varsity four.
St. Lawrence's second varsity eight finished third, less than eight seconds behind Ithaca, which won the race, and just 2.8 seconds behind Smith.
