Saints women's lax rally past Curry for first win, 7-6

he St. Lawrence University women's lacrosse team earned its first win of the 2014 season on Monday evening in West Palm Beach, FL, as the Saints rallied with two goals in the final 4:04 of regulation to defeat Curry College 7-6. Sophomore Michaela Maybee led the Saints with a hat trick, while Hannah Calvelli scored the game-winning goal with 1:52 remaining in regulation.

St. Lawrence (1-1) outshot Curry 25-14 and was a perfect 12-for-12 in clearing attempts. The Saints also finished with a 24-19 edge in ground balls and a 9-6 advantage in free position shots. The Colonels (1-3) trailed 3-2 at the half, but rallied to claim the lead 6-5 before St. Lawrence surged in the final minutes to earn the win. Mel Brickey scored two goals for Curry while Christina Wallis made 13 saves for the Colonels.

Parker Benedict and Maybee helped St. Lawrence to a 2-2 tie in the first half before Abigail Horan's unassisted goal with 1:19 left in the half gave the Scarlet and Brown a 3-2 halftime lead. The Saints finished with a 10-7 edge in shots in the period.

St. Lawrence and Curry exchanged goals to start the second half again, with Brickey and Maybee exchanging two goals each for a 5-4 Saints' lead with 12:24 to play. Curry would level the score with a goal from Haley Carey with 7:00 minutes to play, and Malorie Knowlton gave the Colonels their first lead at 6-5 only 56 seconds later.

Despite seeing the lead slip away, St. Lawrence regrouped thanks to Mackenzie Collins, who assisted on Benedict's second goal with 4:04 left in regulation to tie the score at 6-6. Collins would then set up the eventual game-winning goal from Calvelli with 1:52 left for the 7-6 victory. Addie Cunningham finished with seven saves for St. Lawrence.

The Saints will look to build some momentum when they take on Washington College (MD) on Wednesday at 11:30am before finishing the spring trip on Friday against Fredonia State.
