Saints women's lax edged by No. 12 Cardinals

Junior Alexandra LaMotte gave the Saints a one-goal lead with just over 11 minutes to play and senior captain Kayla Schmalz recorded two goals, but after six ties and three unanswered goals to end the second half from 12th-ranked Wesleyan University the St. Lawrence University women's lacrosse team fell to the Cardinals 8-6 on Thursday afternoon in Englewood, Florida.

Schmalz also posted a team-best, winning four draw controls, while Rachel Boghosian, Ashley Norris, Colby Hoffman and LaMotte tallied one goal each. Great Massey recorded the only assist in today's contest, while Jacqueline Sovie picked up a team-high five ground balls and Tayler Kent caused four turnovers.

Just one minute and 24 seconds into play, Boghosian gave the Scarlet and Brown an early 1-0 over the No. 12 Cardinals. Both teams battled for the lead over the next four goals, with the Saints holding a 3-2 lead with 5:48 to play in the first half after a goal from Hoffman.

Sydney Prokupek and Caitlin Wood recorded back-to-back goals to give Wesleyan a one-goal advantage at the half. Wood's goal was scored with six seconds remaining in the first half.

Schmalz tied the game for the fourth time 4:20 into the second half and again for the fifth time with 12:37 to play.

LaMotte gave the Saints their last lead of the game, a 6-5 advantage, with an unassisted tally with 11:22 to play in regulation. Julia Gretsky rebounded one minute and 11 seconds later to tie the game at six nearing the 10-minute mark.

Prokupek and Horst closed the game for the Cardinals with two goals in the last seven minutes of play.

Horst netted a hat trick for the Cardinals, while Prokupek recorded two goals. Caroline Sgaglione picked up six ground balls and won two draw controls, while five Cardinals caused one turnover each.

Olga Lukas made seven saves in goal for the Saints and Allegra Grant made eight between the pipes for Wesleyan. The Cardinals edged the Saints in shots 22-18, but held only a one shot (15-14) edge in shots on goal.

With the loss, the Saints fell to 2-2 on the season, while Wesleyan improved to 4-1.

St. Lawrence will return home to Canton, New York to host Vassar in its first Liberty League game of the season on Saturday, March 24th at 1 p.m.
